If you’re a
junior, second semester is the time to get serious about creating a college
list. Start researching colleges through their websites, college fairs,
admissions representatives, books, and college guides. By doing so you will get
an idea of what's required and be informed of each college’s process.
While research
is a good place to start, you will learn the most about a college’s suitability
for you by visiting its campus. The ideal time to visit a college is when
you're out of school and the college is in session. Hence President’s Day
weekend and spring break are your best options before colleges break for the summer.
Plan a day visit
and experience an information session and campus tour. Have lunch in the dining
hall and spark a conversation with a group of current students. If there’s
time, venture out to the surrounding campus town to speak with locals and get a
feel of the environment.
If you fall in
love with the school after a visit, definitely send the admissions officer and
student tour guides Thank You cards. After all, every interaction with the
school is cataloged in your file as “demonstrated interest” and may influence
your admit chances.
For your visit,
plan to sit through an information session, take a tour of campus, observe a
class, and have lunch in the dining hall. If there’s time, gain multiple
perspectives beyond that admissions office by speaking with current students,
professors, and town locals.
