Juniors, as you get started this spring with crafting a
college list, would you include a college solely based on the fact that it is tuition-free? In the world of higher education, all the hype this past week was
on President Obama’s big announcement on his policy proposal to make community
college free. While it is a mystery if and how long such policy would take to
go into affect, it’s interesting to know that there are already free college
options for high school students and their families to consider.

Don’t Count Out the Ivy Leagues. When it comes to saving families money for college, Ivy
League schools deserve an honorable mention. For low- and middle-income families, in many instances, these schools will be free or low cost. Known for having the most expensive price tags, Ivy Leagues schools and other highly
selective schools also have the largest endowments. Most of these schools have a “no
loans” policy that replaces loans with grants for eligible students.
Check out University of Chicago's "No Barriers" program for undergraduate students. UChicago has pledged and outlined the school's plan for allocating $100 million in financial aid to ensure that for every qualified applicant, the university is within financial reach.
